They can't speak English. They are afraid of English.
As an English teacher, I offer some methods to teach English in different way, specially for you who want your students can feel the beauty of English :)
1. Giving an exact model for your Students.
Teaching English is like teaching karate :D your students need a model how to fight or perform some movements. So, before asking them to do their speaking, please give them a model.
Example:
Hello class, my name is Dita. I am an English teacher. I am 22 years old.
2. Checking their comprehension.
Do you think your students can speak immediately after you? It can be possible, but sometimes students especially new learning-English students will be shy at the first time. So, check them out first.
Example:
What is my name? What am I? How old am I?
If they can answer rightly your questions, it is a good news to continue your lesson.
Next, try to ask about them.
Example:
What is your name? What are you? How old are you?
If they can answer those questions rightly, you are getting a half-success in teaching English.
3. Working in pairs.
As my experience, before I ask them to do their speaking alone, I ask them to work in pairs. It is good for building their confidence. You can check their work during this activity.
4. Working in whole-class.
This activity can help them to know each other or can make them closer with other friends. Asking them to ask the same questions in pairs activity to all students in the class.
5. Presentation.
After some practices, students get used to speak English. Then, you can ask payback from them. You can ask them to come up and let them introduce themselves.
